If you’ve ever seen a group of school children pedalling confidently down the road with huge grins on their faces, there’s a good chance they were taking part in Bikeability.
Bikeability is the Department for Transport’s flagship cycle training programme for school children in England, run by the Bikeability Trust, a national charity. Their mission is simple but powerful: to make sure everyone has the confidence to ride a bike safely and enjoy this life-changing skill.
Since 2007, Bikeability has helped over 5 million children learn the essential skills they need to cycle on today’s roads. It’s not just about pedalling in a straight line. Bikeability training is hands-on, practical, and designed to give children real-world cycling skills they’ll use forever. Think road safety, balance, confidence, and of course, plenty of fun.
What Makes Bikeability Special?
The Bikeability Trust isn’t just about teaching kids to ride it’s about making cycling a skill for life. Their work is built on five key goals:
Child-focused: Most of their work is about helping children learn to cycle, but they also support adults who want to build confidence on two wheels.
Inclusive: They’re committed to breaking down barriers so that everyone can access cycle training.
Efficient: Bikeability ensures great value for money, delivering training in a smart, effective way.
Influential: They share evidence of how powerful cycling can be, from improving health to reducing environmental impact.
Collaborative: They team up with schools, councils, and organisations (like us!) to make Bikeability a household name.
How Ridgeback Bikes Support Bikeability
At Ridgeback, we’re proud to support Bikeability in their mission. After all, confident riders need the right bikes to get started and that’s where we come in.
We provide hundreds of Ridgeback bikes across a full range of sizes to help Bikeability deliver their training. From our Ridgeback Scoot balance bikes, perfect for little ones learning to balance for the first time all the way up to our 26” bikes for bigger kids, we make sure there’s a bike for every rider, no matter their size or stage of learning.
By supplying the bikes, we’re helping children across England gain a skill that stays with them for life and hopefully inspiring a lifelong love of cycling along the way.
Why It Matters
Cycling isn’t just a way to get from A to B. It’s independence, confidence, and freedom on two wheels. By supporting Bikeability, we’re helping more children discover the joy of cycling safely, and we couldn’t be prouder to play our part.
So, next time you see a group of young riders tackling the roads with confidence, remember: behind those pedals are Bikeability trainers, Ridgeback bikes, and a lot of determination to make cycling a skill for life.
